Los Angeles, CA
Set within Los Angeles’ North Hollywood neighborhood, SML assisted a young family in creating a reclusive urban oasis within the city.
The house design is organized into three sections around a central lofted spine, which contains a living room/dining room space and a separate primary bedroom suite. Filled with natural light from clerestory windows, this central space serves both as a gathering space for guests, as well as mixing zone for daily life between separate home offices, home gym, and open kitchen spaces.

	Los Angeles, CA
Founded in 2004 in New York City, Barcade is the original retro arcade bar that pairs a celebration of vintage 1980s and 1990s arcade games with a love of craft beers.
Barcade LA is located within the Highland Park community of Los Angeles and seeks to adapt the aesthetic of a beloved New York institution to a Northeast Los Angeles lifestyle.

The design focused on preserving as many elements as possible from a masonry building that dates back to 1923, exposing existing brick and roof structure. The building was organized into two spaces to house an extensive collection of rare arcade and pinball games, and two separate bars.

The splayed U-shaped wall surface was designed to provide an encompassing auditorium-like platform for the large scale work. The wall surface serves to divide the gallery space between this newer work displayed on the concave side and twenty of Kruger’s iconic collage works from the 1980s displayed on the convex side.

	Manhattan Beach, CA
Built in 1964 during the height of Surf City culture, this beachside A-frame was originally part of a four building development in rapidly
growing post-war Southern California. Today, the building is one of only two original A-frames that remain in the entire beach cities area of Los Angeles.
The current owners purchased the property in 2020 loving the retro “beach chalet” charm of the house. SML worked to set about
rehabilitating and improving the A-frame structure that fell into
disrepair after decades of deferred maintenance, salt-air abuse, and
choppy alterations, which had carved up the previous single-family home into
multiple studio apartments.

Researching historic plans and precedents
to delicately reconnect the spaces of the house, SML enhanced the aspects of 60s design and surf culture
existing in the A-frame while also modernizing the systems and
operations of the house.
Despite the lofted space and large street-facing windows, the existing A-frame’s interior remained dark and cavernous. A series of skylights were carefully inserted just below the ridgeline between structural members to maximize natural light within living spaces.
SML further enhanced the structure by recapturing unused and awkward triangular spaces imposed by the
A-frame form with custom built-ins and furniture.

	Los Angeles, CA

Built in 1939 and designed by the architect Harwell Hamilton Harris, the Hawk House is an early example of Los Angeles modernism and hillside design. Embodying important themes of modernism at the time such as modular design and Japanese architectural influences, the Hawk House is uniquely perched above the Silver Lake Reservoir offering sweeping views west towards Hollywood and Santa Monica. Originally built for Stan and Ethyle Hawk, the house also acted as the headquarters for the iconic Hawk House brand of Mid-Century furnishings that epitomized indoor-outdoor living. Having only 3 owners throughout its history, the house in 2018 was showing significant deferred maintenance and damage to important architectural features of the structure.

Working with historic preservation consultant Jenna Snow, SML designed and completed the 16 month rehabilitation project working off original plans and details procured from the University of Texas Archives. The job included the replacement of the 80 year old wood roof with fire-rated simulated shakes, the rehabilitation of the complete exterior redwood siding system as well as refurbishment of the severely damaged wraparound windows and doors. The project also involved reclaiming an unfinished lower level crawl-space in order to expand the modest house with an additional two bathrooms, laundry and storage space. We designed the addition in a way to keep the structure within the original footprint while also making the house more modern and functional. The rehabilitation and addition conceived by SML brought this graceful Japanese redwood pavilion home back to life while also preserving the beautiful patina and historic features of Harris’ design.

In addition to the rehabilitation, SML worked to achieve historic monument designation in the city of Los Angeles as well as a Mills Act preservation contract, ensuring this early Harwell Hamilton Harris masterwork is enjoyed by future generations.

	Palm Springs, CA
Setting the new standard for Palm Springs luxury, SML working with Jonathan Adler Interiors envisioned a new four acre, ground-up, estate-style resort. Since the early 2000s the Parker Palm Springs has defined a standard of a modern, quirky and upscale boutique resort. When we approached creating this new resort adjacent to the current property we wanted to reimagine the wonderfully fun and unexpected Parker experience. For this project, the resort is conceived as a 35 room historic streamline moderne estate with buildings and gardens having layers of materials, styles and patina reflecting back to the establishment of Palm Springs before mid-century modernism.

The resort goes beyond the typical Palm Springs weekend getaway and is designed with unique moments and unfolding gardens at a domestic scale. We used this estate resort as an opportunity for the Parker to expand on their expertise as one of the top destinations for storybook weddings and memorable events. Produce gardens could be used as an outdoor dining room and modern guest suites are conceived as new interventions in what might have been an old stable structure. The experience of intimacy, privacy and domestic scale took priority on the design. Services, such as kitchens, elevators and employee circulation are cleverly disguised in the architecture in order to maintain the design vision of an old estate converted into a resort.

	Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles-based structural engineering
firm, John A. Martin & Associates (JAMA), has been an industry
leader since 1953, with a portfolio of significant projects including
the Disney Concert Hall, The Staples Center, and L.A. Live. As the firm
moved into its 65th year, the firm’s leadership felt it needed an innovative
space to better inspire and empower the top young engineering talent
that will help shape the future of the firm for years to come.To facilitate JAMA’s continued engineering innovation, SML designed an open office that promoted interaction between experienced
senior engineers and younger talent. An L-shaped zone of workstations
was enhanced by a dramatic ‘red ribbon’ ceiling element, a subtle nod
to the iconic red scarf worn by the late John A. Martin, which
also served to improve sound quality of the work areas with a
perforated metal decking covering acoustic insulation.

The JAMA workplace is centered by an open collaborative area
connected to the office pantry, with custom leveled bench seating that provide
casual and playful areas to congregate, acoustically isolated booth seating
located within a steel moment frame, and a bar height seating area complete
with beer taps that feature rotating kegs brewed by two home-brewing staff
members.

The material palette of the project is directly drawn from the toolbox of materials JAMA uses throughout the workplace: concrete floors are complemented by raw plywood and steel finishes for custom furniture elements; a conference room bounded by concrete masonry units; a custom meeting table constructed of cross-laminated timber (CLT), a manufactured material more commonly used in roof joists; and corrugated metal decking typically used for roofs that forms the ceiling in workstation areas.

Creating a comfortable and functional workspace is further
complemented by distributed telephone booths and meeting rooms that feature raw
construction images of some of JAMA’s more recent projects in Los Angeles:
Emerson College in Hollywood, Los Angeles International Airport, and the
exterior facade of The Broad Museum.

Located within Los Angeles’ Federal Reserve Bank building in Downtown Los Angeles, one of the challenges of the space is that the high security of the building frequently means that visitors to the space enter only after going through a security screening process equivalent to entering an airport.

To counter this, SML’s solution for JAMA’s space works to surprise visitors from the moment they enter the office. A frameless glass entrance opens to a supergraphic on the space’s conference room. At reception, a row of shelves display unique bobblehead figurines commissioned of all JAMA staff members, a unique introduction to the true pride of the office, its people.

Los Angeles, CAConceived as being your neighborhood gourmet food hall, Stir Market brings together chef-driven casual dining with the hustle and bustle of a lively delicious marketplace. Located in the heart of Los Angeles, the design is a series of unique culinary stations under one roof. The concept includes expo cooking stations, an espresso bar and artisan bakery, European rotisserie, wine & craft beer bar and a fresh grocery with chef-driven prepared foods for takeaway. In addition to on-premise architectural considerations, SML also developed design solutions to address Stir Market’s large catering, event and online ordering operations.
